What you need to know about Hydra

Hydra - the jetset island, located a stone's throw away from Athens

The argosaronic island Hydra is one of the most famous islands in Greece. Its nobility and natural romantic charm already enchanted real superstars like Picasso and Chagall in past times. Today, a trip to Hydra feels like an unwinding break from the stressful modern society. No cars are allowed on the islet, and heavy packages and luggage is being carried manually or by donkeys.

Arriving in Hydra means navigating softly into the half moon formed harbor. Between many white yachts and water taxis, the ferry will find its place and release you onto the neoclassical island. You let your eyes wander around and see whitewashed houses, cobblestone paths leading into the village that lays behind the harbor and white boats whipping to the rhythm of the waves. You hear the sound of the donkeys hooves on the pavement and light Greek chatter all around. Finally, s breeze brings the smell of the sea to you.

Take a stroll through hydra. Sit down at a nice café with view on to the harbor and the sea. Or, emerge yourself in the rich history of Hydra and visit one of the many museums this place has to offer. What about the Ecclesiastical Byzantine Museum in the Cathedral of Hydra or the House of Pavlos Kountouriotis where you can learn more about the most important captain of the island? Otherwise, you can visit the House of Lazaros Kountouriotis, the largest financier of the Revolution in 1821 and a significant personality in Hydras history.

You might also want to explore the little rocky islet Dokos, right next to Hydra. Most inhabitants there are fishermen and farmers. Maybe the people there can also tell you more about the mystical shipwreck that was found in Dokos´sea area. It's said to be the most ancient one in the world…

However, you decide to explore Hydra. Don't miss a sunset cruise with a glass of wine to take in the view of this lovely island.
