Explore Heraklion

In the past Heraklion worked as the harbor of the Minoan empire, where gold, saffron and other treasures were traded with the world. Still today, the city focuses on the harbor, where little fishing boats gently rock with the incoming waves.

The most prominent sight is the Venetian fort from the 16th century - the fort of Koules. Due to its prime position, it can easily be found and is even from afar an imposing sight. Inside, grand wooden doors open into rooms where period pieces are being displayed. Wander in these 26 rooms and enjoy the cool temperature in here. Maybe you feel like walking through a vault - no wonder the walls are more than 8 meters thick.

Take a stroll besides the waterfront and discover little cafés right next to the water where you can sip on a traditional Greek frappé. Later you can walk along the scenic promenade that stretches along the water where seafood restaurants line up.

Behind massive defense walls, the vibrant old city will surely also charm you with nice houses and ancient buildings. The pedestrian-only zones invite you to gaze at the aristocratic buildings, churches and boutiques, as well as fountains. But lets go deeper into the city, the middle of it!

When visiting Heraklion, you cannot miss the famous Morosini fountain right in the middle of the city and the square there. This monument consists of several lions and counts to the most important monuments of the Venetians.
